"Mediterranean Biochemical Network" plan

In July 1998 the Department of Sciences Applied to Biosystems, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology section, University of Cagliari (Sardinia, Italy), set up a scientific project called the "Mediterranean Biochemical Network".

The general aim of this project is to promote real scientific collaboration among universities and research centers in the Mediterranean area operating in the fields of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. More specific objectives of the "Mediterranean Biochemical Network" are as follows:

To support and extend the current collaboration between those institutions already present on the network. On-going joint projects include:
1. comparative thermodynamic studies of respiratory proteins, involving the Italian Universities of Rome, Cagliari and Sassari, the Egyptian University of Mansoura, the University of Malta and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Cyprus;
2. comparative studies of the properties of certain important enzymes (amine oxidases, superoxide dismutase, peroxidases), involving the University of Cagliari, the “Tor Vergata” University of Rome, Mansoura and Malta;
3. biochemical studies of benthic and pelagic mucilage, conducted by the University of Cagliari and the “La Sapienza” University of Rome.

To consider strategies for setting up specific projects in the fields of clinical chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and biotechnology, exploiting the experience and competence of those universities that established the initial nucleus of the "network".

To organize workshops, conferences and meetings to promote and coordinate the intensive exchange of scientific and technological information.

In this way the "Mediterranean Biochemical Network" intends to support these initiatives by establishing working contacts with the main research centers in the Mediterranean countries.
The programs outlined here, together with the description of objectives, represent the starting point for real cooperation among research groups and scientists interested in taking part in this project.
